Westwood Wins St. Jude Classic

14/06/2010

Lee Westwood defeated fellow FJ player Robert Karlsson on the fourth hole of a sudden death playoff to win the St. Jude Classic.

Westwood and Karlsson went par-par-bogey until they returned to No. 18 once again. Westwood stuck his approach 6 feet from the pin on No. 18. Karlsson left his birdie putt from 43 feet away to extend the playoff about a foot short leaving Westwood to roll in his six-footer for the win. Robert Garrigus came to the final hole in regulation with a three shot lead but struggled to the finish and forced the three-way playoff. He was eliminated following a bogey on the first extra hole.

Westwood came in having played well, not missing a cut in his 10 starts on TOUR this year with four top 10s. He had gone 122 starts on the TOUR since winning the 1998 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He finished with a 2-under 68 on Sunday and a 10-under 270 total for the week.

Karlsson, who won his ninth European Tour victory at Qatar earlier this year, still is looking for his first PGA TOUR title. He shot a final round 69.

Seventh Heaven for Zach!

31/05/2010

Zach Johnson shot a closing 6-under 64 Sunday to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial by three shots. Zach earned his seventh career PGA Tour victory and the first for the new FJ SPORT golf shoe. FJ SPORT is designed and developed for the player seeking bold, athletic-inspired performance golf shoes.  Utilizing striking patterns and color, FJ SPORT integrates proven performance attributes and premium materials.

With a 21-under 259 total, Zach not only set a new tournament record, but recorded the lowest four-round total on the PGA Tour since FJ player Geoff Ogilvy won the season-opening SBS Championship at 22-under 270.

With storms surrounding the golf course all day Sunday, Zach endured several weather delays to earn the coveted plaid jacket. Johnson's clinching shot at the 381-yard 17th was his fifth birdie on the back nine. Three of those birdies came on putts of at least 22 feet in a four-hole stretch. He took the lead for good when he drained the longest of the three, a 25-footer at the 427-yard 15th hole soon after the initial weather delay.

"I love it. There's a reason I love playing here and keep coming back," Johnson said. "The course does suit me as far as shot-making. I just feel honored."

Camilo Claims Crown at Honda Classic; FJ Wins Eight of First 10 Events to Start PGA Tour Season

8/03/2010

Camilo Villegas wore FJ golf shoes and a StaSof glove to win the Honda Classic.  He shot a final-round 68 to win by five shots on Sunday. This win marks his third PGA Tour victory and a perfect way to cap a week, that featured a lot of travel and a lot of celebration. The win also marks the eighth win for FootJoy players in the first 10 PGA Tour events this season.

Camilo, who became just the fourth player under the age of 30 with at least three Tour wins, finished at 13-under 267, the lowest 72-hole score since the Honda moved to PGA National in 2007. And Villegas made it look easy most of the way, too. He led by only two after four holes, but three straight birdies – starting with a 25-footer on No. 8 – sent Villegas to 15 under and six shots clear of the field. He capped the day in style with a 20-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole, then raised both hands skyward.

Villegas didn’t even play a practice round at PGA National this week. After finishing tied for eighth at the Phoenix Open, Villegas headed back to his native Colombia on Monday to help open the Nationwide Tour’s Pacific Rubiales Bogota Open, the first PGA Tour-sanctioned event in South America. After landing in South Florida on Wednesday, he teed it up Thursday morning on short rest and following two stellar rounds of 66, he had a share of the lead going into the weekend and was en route to his third career PGA Tour title.

Poulter Captures Biggest Victory!

22/02/2010

Ian Poulter (who wore FJ ICON & a SciFlex glove) captured the biggest victory of his career on Sunday by leading the final 28 holes of the championship match to win the all-England final, 4 and 2, at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship.

Along with winning his first World Golf Championship, the 34-year-old Poulter won for the first time on American soil. It was his ninth European Tour title and moved him to a career-best No. 5 in the world rankings.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Poulter said, after closing out the match with a par on the 34th hole. “I knew I was in great form. I felt comfortable all day on the golf course.”

A veteran of two Ryder Cup teams (2004, 2008), Poulter is gaining a strong reputation for his prowess in match play, especially after this week. He improved his overall record in the Match Play Championship to 18-7, and was so dominant over the weekend that he trailed for only one hole over the final 50 holes of the tournament. That came early Sunday morning, when his opponent put his approach shot to 7 feet on the second hole for an eagle that was conceded. Poulter answered immediately with a tee shot into 8 feet on the third, then took the lead for good at No. 7.

In fact, five times after his opponent won a hole, Poulter won the next one. Late in the match as he was clinging to a 2-up lead, Poulter flew the green on the par-3 12th, leaving him a tough chip up the slope. He came within inches of holing it, keeping his cushion, until he effectively put the match away at the 15th with another tough pitch, with mud on his ball, up a steep slope to the green.

“I would say my short game, certainly this week, has been as good as it’s ever been,” Poulter said. “The last 12 months, it’s been up there with the best of them.”

The timing couldn’t have been better. A short time later, Poulter was beaming as he posed with the “Walter Hagen Cup,” the name of this WGC trophy. Hagen, along with his 11 majors, was known for his eye-catching attire.

Super Sunday for Stricker

8/02/2010

For the fifth consecutive week, a FootJoy player claimed victory on the PGA TOUR as Steve Stricker (wearing SYNR-G shoes & a PureTouch Limited glove) closed with a 1-under 70 Sunday for a two-shot victory over fellow FJ player Luke Donald at the Northern Trust Open.

Stricker finished with a 16-under 268 total and won for the eighth time in his career and the fourth time in his last 15 starts. He also moved up to No. 2 in the world golf rankings for the second time in his career.

Stricker didn’t make it easy on himself, having to grind for pars as Donald kept pouring in birdies. But after Donald missed two short birdie attempts, Stricker fired off two straight birdies to restore a comfortable margin.

“It was hard today,” Stricker said. “I aged a lot out there. It was a grind from the get-go.”

Stricker seemed to struggle all day, missing several greens to the left but he had five consecutive one-putt greens and continued to get himself out of minor jams.

Half of Stricker’s eight career victories have come in the last eight months dating to his playoff win at Colonial. He turns 43 later this month, and shows no sign of letting up.

Crane Reigns at Torrey Pines

1/02/2010

FootJoy players are a perfect four-for-four to start the season as Ben Crane (DryJoys shoes & SciFlex glove) rode a red-hot putter to win the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Crane made two birdie putts over 45 feet then tapped in a 30-inch putt for par on the 18th hole for a 2-under 70 and a one-shot victory over fellow FJ players Michael Sim and Marc Leishman. It was Crane’s third career victory, and first in nearly five years, and this one earned him a trip back to the Masters.

Starting the final round two shots behind, Crane opened with three birdies in five holes, including one from just over 45 feet on No. 3. He expanded his lead to three shots with another 45-foot birdie putt on the 11th.

Sim, the 25-year-old Australian who earned his Tour card following three victories last year on the Nationwide Tour, kept with Crane the entire round and had his chances to the very end. After missing his birdie chance on 18, Crane tapped in his par for the win and a 13-under 275 total that earns him a trip back to Augusta National for the first time in three years.

Three Consecutive Wins for FJ

25/01/2010

Bill Haas (FJ ICON) made a short birdie putt on the 18th hole to earn his first PGA Tour victory at the Bob Hope Classic on Monday, edging fellow FJ players Matt Kuchar (MyJoys) and Bubba Watson (FJ golf shoes, SciFlex glove) by one stroke with a bogey-free 8-under 64. Haas becomes the third consecutive FJ player to win this season, joining Geoff Ogilvy (SBS Championship) and Ryan Palmer (Sony Open).

Haas was the last of the co-leaders to play the 18th, and an outstanding 3-iron approach from 206 yards allowed him to two-putt his way to a 30-under 330 finish. He also birdied the par three 17th hole.

“I’d been wanting to win from the first tournament I played, but it’s a process, and there’s a lot to it,” said Haas. “It’s special, but I don’t know if it’s a monkey off my back. I know how hard it was to win, and I’m grateful.”

After grinding through five rounds on four courses in the rain-delayed tournament, Haas couldn't celebrate until he made it through the last hole with his hands shaking and fingers going numb -- and at that point, he didn't even know his father Jay, the 1988 Hope Classic champion, had made it back from the Champions Tour event in Hawaii to watch him.

“It’s definitely neat that down the road, 22 years from now, we can look at both our names on the list here,” Bill Haas said. “I’m not trying to compare myself to him. He’s almost unreachable.”
